Thomas Burberry founded Burberry of London in 1856 when he was 21. In 1911 Burberry's gabardine fabric became world famous when Burberry of London was selected to outfit the expedition to the South Pole by Capt. R. Amundsen. Burberry's gabardine tent was left in place at the pole to let the competing Capt. Scott know that Amundsen had found the pole.
