Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel
Gabrielle Chanel was born in 1883, one of five children. She later adopted the name"Coco" while performing as a singer (1905-1908). Coco Chanel set up her first millinery shop in Paris in 1910. Her simple hats found popularity and in 1920 her chemise set a fashion trend. Coco Chanel was the first French designer to use jersey and create the "little boy" look by putting women in suits. She invested in land a grew flowers to create perfumes and after the successes of Caron who used synthetic scents, she also experimented with these modern scents to create the worlds top selling perfume "Chanel No. 5". Later Chanel award winning perfumes would include "Allure", "Coco Mademoiselle" and "Chance".
