The Guess Story

GUESS was established in 1981 by the Marciano brothers, who left the south of France in pursuit of the American dream. Inspired by a European influence, the Marcianos put their innovative touch on the apparel industry, redefining denim. One of their initial designs was a stonewashed, slim-fitting jeans, the 3-zip Marilyn. Bloomingdale's was the first department store to welcome the brand by ordering two dozen pairs of jeans. They disappeared from the shelves in just hours. This was the beginning of a long success story.

The Marcianos vision move the brand into new frontiers. GUESS became a symbol of a young, sexy and adventurous lifestyle. Throughout the decades GUESS invited people to dream with its iconic and timeless advertising campaigns and turned unknown faces into famous models including Claudia Schiffer, Carre Otis, Eva Herzigova, Anna Nicole Smith, Leatitia Casta, Carla Bruni, and Naomi Campbell. Today Guess is a global lifestyle brand with a full range of apparel and accessories, 19 licensing partners and 1,210 stores in over 80 countries.

Paul Marciano's discerning style has haped GUESS from its inception. Paul is credited with the vision that is the cornerstone of the GUESS image. It is this vision that has created some of the most Iconic images in the history of fashion advertising for which GUESS advertising has received the industry's highest honors including the Clio and Designers and Art Directors Awards, assuring GUESS place in American pop culture.

With his unique eye for dramatic photography, he has created images that invite viewers to go on a voyeuristic journey into the campaign and create an emotional response from them.

The successful global expansion of GUESS may be attributed in part to Paul's lead role in overseeing the development of the domestic and international licensing and export businesses. Under his keen supervision, GUESS currently has 19 licensees and is distributed in more than 80 countries.
