Oscar de la Renta was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He studied art at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, Spain then 1961 he moved to Paris where he was an assistant to Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin Paris. In 1963 Oscar de la Renta moved to New York City where he went to work for Elizabeth Arden as a designer. Later he worked for Jane Derby and then in 1965 he opened his own firm under the name of Oscar de la Renta.
