Perry Ellis was from Virginia and he began his career in department store retailing. His approach to merchandising in an innovative way eventually lead to one of his important vendors hiring Perry. Perry moved to New York and the sportswear firm was so convinced about Perry's designs that they gave him an opportunity to start his own division, which he named "Portfolio". In 1978 Perry became head of his own women's sportswear collection. By 1980 Perry started his men's sportswear collection and this expanded his line to include "Perry Ellis America" label as well as perfume and cologne.
