Pierre Cardin Biography

Pierre Cardin was born in Venice, Italy where he later worked as an apprentice tailor. Cardin moved to Paris after the war where he worked for Christian Dior and other haute couture designers. In 1950 Cardin opened his own salon and in 1959 he presented his first ready-to-wear collection, for which he was temporarily expelled from membership in the Chambre Syndicale. Pierre Cardin purchase Maxim's Paris restaurants and opened in New York and London. He later created the Maxim's Hotels and moved his show to the exclusive Espace Pierre Cardin near the American Embassy in Paris.
