St John was created in 1962 by co-founders Marie Gray and Robert Gray. Mary Gray was the daughter of European refugees who had settled in Canada, later moved to California in the United States. Robert Gray graduated from the University of Southern California. Today Marie Gray ramins as Chief Designer and Kelly Gray, the daughter, is the Creative Director, while Robert Gray is Chairman of St. John.
