Charles Fredrick Worth Biography
Inventory, Designer of Fashion and Perfume History
The House of Worth was created by Charles Fredrick Worth, who was born in October 1825 in Lincolnshire, England. Charles Worth apprenticed in London and moved to Paris in 1845 to work for Gagelin. In 1851 he married Marie Vernet, who assisted him in opening his first store in 1857, where they specialized in making ball gowns for the aristocracy. Worth is synonymous with the birth of haute couture. He was a visionary and introduced embroidery machines, lace frames and chemical colorings. He was succeeded by his sons Jean Phillip and Gaston.
